Joke Ridge is a control panel that allows Mac users to mount ISO 9660 CD-ROM, with Joliet and Rock Ridge filename support.
Although Macs can read ISO 9660 CD-ROM natively, systems before MacOS X cannot manage Joliet and Rock Ridge filenames, typically used in Windows and Unix systems. As a consequence, in volumes created under these platforms Macs usually see filenames with no more than 8+3 characters, even if they were originally longer.
Joke Ridge shows full filenames unless they are more than 31 characters long. In this case, names are truncated. In MacOS 9 or later, Joke Ridge supports longer names, but you will be able to use them only if your applications also support long names.

You may use this software for free. However, it is copyrighted software, owned by the author, Alejandro Castro. You may make as many copies as you want and distribute them, as long as you include the full package with all its program files and documentation files, but you must not: 1) distribute modified versions of this software; 2) charge money for the use of this software. You are allowed to charge for the media and for your distribution costs, but it must be clear to the recipient that he or she is paying for these concepts, not for the use of this software. You cannot include this software as part of a commercial package, unless you have written permission from the copyright owner.
You use this software at your own risk. You acknowledge that it is not defect free and that it may not work as intended. The author will not be held responsible for any damages or losses caused by the use of this software.
System requirements
A Macintosh computer.
Some available RAM (200 KB for the program, plus 64 KB for each ISO 9660 mounted volume).
Some available disk space in your startup disk (200 KB or so).
MacOS version: 7.5.3 or later.
MacOS X compatibility: Joke Ridge does not support MacOS X. MacOS X supports Joliet and Rock Ridge volumes without the need of third party extensions. Having Joke Ridge installed doesn't seem to affect the stability of MacOS X nor the Classic environment, but Joke Ridge will not be used to read CD-ROM, not even by classic applications.
Installation instructions
1.- Download it
If you haven't already done, you must first download the compressed file "jokeridge.sit". It is accesible at the following address:

2.- Expand it
The file "jokeridge.sit" can be expanded using Stuffit Expander™, by Aladdin Systems. If you don't have it, you can find it at

Once uncompressed, you will have in your disk a folder named "Joke Ridge Files". This folder should contain the following files:
• Joke Ridge A control panel.
• Readme The instructions you are reading now
3.- Move to Control Panels folder
Next you must move the file "Joke Ridge" to your Control Panels folder. To do this, it is enough dragging its icon to the System Folder icon, and press the "OK" button when a dialog prompts you to move the file to the Control Panels folder.
4.- Disable other ISO 9660 mounters
If you have another software that mounts ISO 9660 CD-ROM, you must uninstall it or disable it, or it will compete with Joke Ridge to mount ISO 9660 CDs. This includes "ISO 9660 File Access", the standard ISO 9660 mounter included with MacOS, and "Joliet Volume Access", by Thomas Tempelmann.
If you have "Joliet Volume Access", you can use the control strip "UDF/ISO/Joliet Enabler" included with this software to disable both "Joliet Volume Access" and "ISO9660 File Access".
If you don't have the UDF/ISO/Joliet Enabler, you must move the file "ISO9660 File Access" from your Extensions folder to another folder (such as Extensions (disabled)). Be aware that "ISO9660 File Acces" could have a different name in localized versions of the operating system. It is better not to delete the file, so it can be easily restored in case you are not satisfied with Joke Ridge.
You could also disable "ISO9660 File Access" using the Extensions Manager, but then you would only be allowed to disable the full "Foreign File Access" thing, so you would not be able to mount other formats such as Audio CD, High Sierra, UDF, etc.
5.- Restart
As the last step, restart the computer. If you have the UDF/ISO/Joliet Enabler or if "ISO9660 File Access" was not installed the last time you started up, this step is not required; just open the Joke Ridge control panel and it will be ready to mount the next volume you place in your CD reader.
How to use
Once Joke Ridge is installed, nothing else is needed to mount ISO 9660 volumes except inserting them into the CD Reader.
However there are a few options you may choose if you open the Joke Ridge control panel.
You may unckeck one or both the options "Mount Rock Ridge and plain ISO 9660 volumes" and "Mount Joliet volumes", so that Joke Ridge does not mount the corresponding volume types. This is useful if you are using Joke Ridge simultaneously with another ISO 9660 mounter that also allows this kind of setup, so you can mount each volume type with a different program. If you uncheck both options, Joke Ridge will not mount any volumes, but it will remain in memory.
If you don't want Joke Ridge to load at system startup, uncheck the option "Load Joke Ridge at system startup". With this option unchecked, you must open the Joke Ridge control panel at least once after system startup if you need to mount ISO 9660 volumes.
If you want to free immediately all the memory assigned to Joke Ridge, you must first unmount all volumes mounted by Joke Ridge, then check the option "Unload Joke Ridge when this panel is closed" and close the panel. Joke Ridge will be loaded again the next time you open the panel or restart the computer.
You need MacOS 9 or later to correcty see filenames more than 31 characters long. You also need an application supporting long Unicode filenames, such as Kilometre Browser (http://www.alex-castro.com/km).
Known Bugs and Limitations
Joke Ridge allows a maximum of 10000 directories per volume. If there are more directories, they will not be seen.
There is a maximum of 65535 files per directory. If there are more files in the same directory, they will not be seen.
Filenames longer than 31 characters will be truncated (their names will be changed if needed to avoid filename duplication), unless you are using MacOS 9 or later and an application supporting long Unicode filenames.
Fragmented files (required by ISO 9660 level 3) are not supported. They will not be read correctly.
In Joliet filenames, characters unknown to the system script will not be correctly displayed in the Finder. If Unicode Converter is not present, only Roman codes will be correctly displayed, regardless of the system script.
